Israeli Energy Minister Steinitz at the 23rd World Energy Congress

The Atlantic Council will hold a panel discussion at the 23rd World Energy Congress titled “A New Landscape in the Eastern Mediterranean”.

The panel will start with introductory remarks by the Atlantic Council President and CEO Frederick Kempe and be followed by opening remarks of H.E. Dr. Yuval Steinitz, Minister of National Infrastructures, Energy and Water Resources of Israel and H.E. Berat Albayrak, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey. This will be the first public appearance by an Israeli Minister at a conference in Turkey since the normalization of relations between Turkey and Israel.

The panel will focus on recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region which are accelerating the efforts to establish natural gas trade within and from the region.  These developments include intensification of the reunification talks in Cyprus and normalization of relations between Turkey and Israel.  How will these developments and more affect the prospects for gas trade from the Eastern Mediterranean to Turkey or via Turkey to markets in Europe?  What are the mutual influences between the political developments in the region and energy trade?

The session will be moderated by the founding director and chairman of the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center, Richard L. Morningstar, and will include high-ranking experts and policymakers: Robin Dunnigan, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Diplomacy at the US State Department; David Koranyi, Director of the Eurasian Energy Futures Initiative at the Atlantic Council; Brenda Shaffer, nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Center and visiting researcher and adjunct professor at Georgetown University's Center for Eurasian, Russian, and Eastern European Studies (CERES); Yossi Abu, CEO of Delek Drilling and Avner Oil Exploration and Ertuğrul Altın, Advisor to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey.
